A Night with Jason Reitman

Around 10pm last night, as I'm working away diligently on a Saturday night finishing up a paper, I discovered via Jason Reitman's twitter account that Paramount was offering a free screening of Up in the Air this evening, with a Q&A with Reitman thereafter.

Of course, my initial reaction was to text everyone I knew in Boston, perform an exhaustive Google search for details, and plan to see the film I was most anticipating. This was too good to be true, and I was going no matter what.

Although we had to jump through some hoops to actually get into the theater, my friends and I were able to weasel our way in. I was reminded of the time Hannah and I held up a long line of PT Anderson fans to see There Will Be Blood in Chicago. I can be scary sometimes when it comes to film screenings.

The film was absolutely fantastic. I will write up a review tomorrow (I need some time to let it sink in a little), but I should mention that it was my favorite film experience of the year so far.

The Q&A with Reitman was an absolute blast. He kept saying that this is the film he's wanted to make since he started directing, his most important and personal project.

For some reason, I was completely starstruck and nervous when I went up to him for an autograph after the film. Rather than saying something intelligent like:

1. Hey, my father is a management consultant. Thanks for a compelling and thoughtful portrayal of someone in that profession.
2. I'm excited that I can still say that I've loved every film you've made so far.
3. Thank you for your time. I really enjoyed it.

Instead, I found myself babbling something about how I'm sorry I only had a ratty notebook for him to sign, that I was writing my thesis in this notebook and that it was the only thing I had on me for him to sign.

Here's his message to me:

  1. At least there's a semblance of a J. I got a squiggle.
